Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

What is colon hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy, also known as colonics, is a gentle way of internally cleansing the colon from accumulated waste matter, by introducing water through the rectum into the colon. As the water flows in and out, it washes the colon, carrying with it waste matter. In combination with clean diet and regular exercise, colonics can help people break unhealthy habits and improve their overall wellbeing.

Why is colon hydrotherapy important?
The majority of people, largely due to improper lifestyle, have impacted colons. Without a clean colon, we may become susceptible to a number of health challenges including indigestion, allergy, backache, body odour, fatigue, disturbed sleep, menstrual challenges, depression, etc. Thus, it is important to continuously de-obstruct the colon from impacted waste matter.

Is colon hydrotherapy safe?
Yes, when performed in a professional setting. At Life Colonics, the certified Colon Hydrotherapist uses Health Canada and FDA approved device and clean disposable supplies (such as speculums, hoses, etc.) to bring you the most hygienic and safest experience possible. Following each therapy, the machine is thoroughly disinfected with germicidal solution and then extensively rinsed with water. The machine is also equipped with valves that prevent waste from flowing back to the clean water supply. Additionally, the machine uses a 3-stage water purification system to remove sediments, chlorine, and microorganisms from the water.

Is the therapist qualified?
Yes. The therapist is certified to perform colonics and the certificate is displayed on-site.

How many colon hydrotherapy sessions do I need?
In general, we recommend 6-9 colon hydrotherapy sessions (spaced 1-7 days apart). However, this number may vary from client to client depending on colon condition. The Colon Hydrotherapist will make recommendations based on each client’s individual needs. Once the colon is cleaned, we recommend at least one session per month for maintenance.

Does Life Colonics offer any discounts?
Yes. For discounts on colonics, please see packages on Pricing page. We also offer other discounted packages every season change that we send via email. Please note all packages are final sale and expire 1 year after date of purchase.

What forms of payment are accepted at Life Colonics?
Cash & e-transfer are the only accepted forms of payment.

Is there a cancellation policy?
Yes. There is a 48-hour cancellation policy. If you wish to cancel an appointment, please do so at least 48 hours prior to the appointment. Otherwise, you will be fully charged for the service. To cancel an appointment, please Contact Us.

How do I prepare for the session?
We suggest refraining from food at least 2 hours before the appointment, and avoiding obstructive and dehydrating foods and drinks such as junk foods, nuts, seeds, meats, dairy, grains, legumes, alcohol, and coffee at least 24 hours prior. If this is your first time at the new location, please print, complete, and bring Client Intake Form with you to save time. Please know the contraindications to colon hydrotherapy before booking an appointment (see Client Intake Form).

How long is the session?
The appointment is one hour long, but the actual colon hydrotherapy is 36-45 minutes long so as to achieve an effective cleanse without overexerting the body. Please arrive on time.

What should I expect during the session?
During the session, a certified Colon Hydrotherapist explains the procedure and ensures maximum comfort at all times. The procedure itself is safe and painless. It includes gently inserting a clean disposable speculum into the rectum and introducing purified temperature and pressure controlled water in and out of the colon. During the session, several filling and emptying cycles are performed within 36-45 minutes. This softens and loosens waste matter allowing it to be released through an outflow tube that is connected to a drain (making it a closed system) without any exposure to you or the therapist. Trapped gases and/or parasites may be released along with the fecal matter. The flow of water into the colon helps, not only wash the colon, but also “exercise” colon muscles, thus stimulating natural peristalsis, which is fundamental for digestive health. A lighted “viewing tube” allows you to see the discharged matter as it leaves the colon. The therapist will gently massage the abdomen to help dislodge impacted waste form colon walls. A good colonic yields 20-30 bowel movements worth of matter. At the end of the session, you will be asked to leave the colonic table and head to the toilet to release excess waste and/or water. Detoxification and healthy living are discussed during the first few sessions.

Are there any restrictions after the session?
After colonics, you may return to normal activities just as you would after a bowel movement. It is best to avoid obstructive and dehydrating foods and drinks such as junk foods, nuts, seeds, meats, dairy, eggs, grains, legumes, alcohol, and coffee at least 24 hours after appointment.

How do people feel after the session?
Most people experience an immediate relief at the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. However, people new to colonics may experience some discomfort and fatigue afterwards, as the cleanse can stir up old toxic matter. In that case, we recommend resting, applying a heat pad on the abdomen, and keeping the diet clean (avoid obstructive and dehydrating foods and drinks such as junk foods, nuts, seeds, meats, dairy, eggs, grains, legumes, alcohol, and coffee) or preferably fasting (on green juices). The discomfort usually passes within 24 hours. It usually means obstructions are trying to exit the body. If it persists, book another appointment within the next few days. After the first few sessions, almost everyone appreciates the benefits of colonics.

Can I have colon hydrotherapy during menstruation?
Yes, colon hydrotherapy is perfectly fine during menstruation and can help relieve uncomfortable menstrual symptoms. In fact, it is considered a good time to cleanse since the body is naturally cleansing itself at that time. Menstruation will not affect the success of the therapy, however, some women prefer to wait until their menstrual period is over.

Does colon hydrotherapy wash away the good bacteria?
The majority of people, largely due to improper lifestyle, have impacted colons, which result in sub-optimal environments for gut microbes. As colon hydrotherapy washes away impacted waste, it provides a more favourable environment for gut microbes to thrive and populate. It is best to keep fruits and vegetables the staple of your diet, as they are the best food for intestinal microbes. It is also key to avoid foods and drinks that impact the bowels (such as junk foods, nuts, seeds, meats, dairy, eggs, grains, legumes, alcohol, and coffee).

Is colon hydrotherapy a better alternative to synthetic laxatives?
Yes. Synthetic laxatives irritate the digestive system. Consequently, the body tries to expel them out in the form of watery stool, which results in incomplete evacuation and dehydration. In contrast, colonics thoroughly washes impacted waste matter without the use of irritating substances, thus keeping the body hydrated. If necessary, I would only choose mild herbal laxatives, but would avoid over-doing them, as the body can develop dependency on them over-time.

Can I become dependent on colon hydrotherapy?
No. On the contrary, colon hydrotherapy helps “exercise” colon muscles by providing resistance against colon walls, much like the resistance needed to build muscles during exercise. This stimulates natural peristalsis, allowing the colon to become stronger and work better on its own.

What is the difference between colonics and enemas?

In enemas, ~1-2 liters of water is injected into the colon at a time. In colonics, ~50-200 liters is going in and out allowing the water to travel farther and permeate colonic folds. Thus, colonics are much more effective than enemas.
